The trust killer nobody talks about

Quick thought for you today.

When most people think about building trust, they focus on credibility.

  • They try to prove they know what they are doing
  • They show credentials
  • They demonstrate expertise

That is important. But it is not the leverage point.

The Trust Equation has 4 variables:

  1. Credibility: Do they believe you know what you are doing?
  2. Reliability: Do you follow through consistently?
  3. Intimacy: Do they feel safe opening up to you?
  4. Self-Orientation: Are your actions about them or about you?

The first 3 are in the numerator. They add up.

Self-Orientation is the denominator. It divides everything.

You can have perfect credibility, flawless reliability, and deep intimacy.

But if the other person senses that you are in it for yourself, trust collapses.

The denominator wipes out the numerator.

This is why the best intelligence officers I have worked with are not the most credentialled.

They are the most genuinely interested in other people.

They listen more than they talk.

They make every interaction about the other person.

Trust is currency.

Genuine interest generates intelligence that transactions never will.
