I get this question a lot.

"Is this for intelligence professionals only?"

No.

The Trust Equation was not invented by an intelligence agency.

It was developed by David Maister, Charles Green, and Robert Galford for their book The Trusted Advisor.

It is a universal framework for understanding how trust works in any professional relationship.

We teach it in our HUMINT Fundamentals course because it is foundational to everything intelligence professionals do.

You cannot recruit a source, develop an asset, or build a network without understanding trust at a structural level.

But the same framework applies if you are:

  • A consultant trying to win a client's confidence
  • An analyst building relationships with sources in the field
  • A founder negotiating with investors or partners
  • A journalist cultivating sources for investigative work
  • A risk professional conducting due diligence
  • Anyone who needs another person to trust them enough to share something valuable

The Trust Equation is not about espionage. It is about human psychology. And it works everywhere.
